FIRST, THE BASICS: WHAT IS MINERAL MAKEUP FOUNDATION AND HOW DOES IT DIFFER TO NORMAL FOUNDATION?

The big selling point of Mineral Foundation is that it is usually cleaner and more ‘natural’ than conventional foundations. Generally made without questionable ingredients such as talc, mineral oils, alcohols and preservatives, they are a solid choice for the conscious consumer or for sensitive skin. Instead, mineral foundations use a formula composed of natural minerals such as mica, zinc and titanium oxide (the latter two also being popular physical UV filters) which are milled to a powder. Because Lily Lolo isn’t too finely milled to clog pores, it’s also one of the better foundations to opt for if you have breakout-prone skin. Of course, mineral foundations also come in cream and liquid formulas, so you can choose your preferred texture. We think Lily Lolo has an edge, however: some mineral formulas can feel a little crude. But despite being natural and not containing the usual ingredients that make for a smooth application, Lily Lolo’s range still produces an extremely high quality finish!

LILY LOLO MINERAL FOUNDATION: STARTING WITH THE ORIGINAL

When a vegan mineral foundation has been a bestseller since the day it dropped and has won too many awards to count, you know it's good! Opt for a flawless finish on a night out, or just dust it in light circles for a more natural daytime look. Without any bronzer or highlighter on top, the finish is matte – but not cakey or powdery (hooray!).

Now, here’s our favourite thing about Lily Lolo Foundation: you don’t need to dread what your skin will look like the next morning. Hey, we’ve all been there! When you spend a night absolutely slaying in a full face of makeup, many of us (especially if you’re prone to breakouts) are largely resigned to getting a pimple (or few) the next day. Possibly because of its minimalist ingredients or ultra-light, breathable coverage, it won’t leave your skin in a revenge-seeking state. Makes sure you wash off your makeup with a good oil cleanser at the end of the day, of course, but sleep easy knowing Lily Lolo is very kind on skin. 

LILY LOLO CREAM FOUNDATION: DEWY COVERAGE FOR DRY SKIN

If powder isn’t really your thing or if you have skin on the dry side, then you’re going to want to be wearing Lily Lolo’s Cream Foundation. We think it’s an excellent dupe for MAC’s Cream Compact Foundation, minus the potentially irritating ingredients like polyethylene. As with the rest of its cosmetics, Lily Lolo’s Cream Foundation is clean, vegan and cruelty-free. Infused with jojoba and argan oils, the nourishing formula slides over dry and sensitive skin to provide medium, buildable coverage with a radiant finish.  You can apply it with a brush, fingers or sponge, and it is just as friendly to skin as the mineral powder version (forgot to wash my face and fell asleep still wearing it by mistake, can confirm!).

LILY LOLO BB CREAM: DEWY SKIN IN DRY CONDITIONS

Voted by Marie Claire as the best natural BB Cream on the market, Lily Lolo's BB Cream is particularly good because it’s silicone-free. While silicone is actually a harmless ingredient that can enhance the texture of a product, it doesn’t always suit oilier skin types because it can function as an occlusive. Hence, this vegan beauty balm won’t irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin. Packed with nourishing ingredients (such as vitamin E, hyaluronic acid and aloe), it’s great for light, soft coverage and finishes slightly dewy. Q: Is Lily Lolo a good brand?

On a more personal level though, the answer to that question depends on how your skin responds. Our own experience suggests Lily Lolo is one of the best foundation brands for sensitive and congestion-prone skin that might not otherwise react well to more conventional brands.

A: Lily Lolo is made in the UK, and was founded by British-based Vikki Khan. She actually got the tongue twisting name for the brand by naming it after her sisters, Lisa (Lily) and Lorraine (Lolo)!  

Q: How to apply Lily Lolo Mineral Foundation?
A: UseLily Lolo’s Super Kabuki Brush for a flawless application. And don't worry - the lockable sifter means no spills or mess! Before you start, ensure that moisturiser is fully absorbed into the skin. Because it’s a powder foundation, it’ll need a clean, dry palette for the most even application. Sprinkle a little foundation into the lid of your jar. Using your Super Kabuki brush, swirl into the minerals to pick up product and tap off excess. Starting where coverage is needed most, apply in circular, buffing motions. Continue applying in light layers until your desired coverage is achieved.

Q: How do you apply Lily Lolo Concealer?
A: Lily Lolo’s Mineral Concealer is applied much in the same way as its Mineral Foundation, but just on the areas you want to highlight (i.e. under the eyes, on the browbone and the cheekbone). Applying concealer after rather than before your foundation will mean you will use less and it should produce a lighter, more natural finish. If your concealer is a little light, try shaking a little of your Mineral Foundation shade in and mixing. For a more precise application, use a concealer brush or sponge, shake off the excess and apply where needed in small circular motions.

Q: Is Lily Lolo really sustainable and all-natural?
A: There’s no universal standard or definition of what’s considered ‘natural’ when it comes to cosmetics. However, Lily Lolo is ultra-clean in that it is free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, PEGs, mineral oils, synthetic dyes, plastics, and any other harsh chemical you can think of. It also employs large concentrations of its featured natural ingredients (all of which are responsibly sourced). This means you can enjoy your Lily Lolo makeup with a clean conscience!
